Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has asked the presidency to consider establishment of Federal Teaching Service Commission with the aim of prioritizing the welfare of teachers in Federal Government Colleges (Unity Schools) across the country
Chairman of NUT, Federal Wing, Comrade Alex Okonta who made the call during the wing's delegate conference of the union in Abuja, lamented that teachers of Federal Government Colleges (Unity Schools) are being owed accumulated arrears.
He called on the Federal Government to ensure payment of these arrears without delay.
Okonta added that the establishment of a functional teaching service commission would remove the bottleneck affecting the promotion and restore the lost glory of federal schools in Nigeria.
He further called for the implementation of the new Teachers Salary Scale (TSS), approved in 2020 by the immediate past administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.
He lamented that a lot of federal teachers have not been promoted for years, stressing the need for their promotion as and when due given the nature of the job they do.
Okonta also spoke on the policy of disarticulation of schools, noting that while the states have carried out this policy, federal schools are still operating on the old system.
He further stated that the non-implementation of the policy has been affecting the standard and welfare of teachers.
Edu-Biznews recalls that the president of the union, Comrade Titus Amba had during the conference called on the Federal Government to prevail on the State Governments to take over the running of primary schools from the Local Government, saying the basic education of first nine years for pupils should be handled by the states for effective and qualitative education
The union decried, a situation where teachers in primary schools are being owed backlog of unpaid salaries and allowances under the current arrangement
