Thirty (30) engineering students of Nigeria's premier tertiary institution, Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, have been awarded scholarship to study in Hangzhou Vocational and Technical College based in China, this year, under an exchange programme agreement between the college and the institution.
The Rector of the college, Dr. Engr. Ibraheem Abdul disclosed this during the courtesy visit of Joint Council Campus of National Association of Nigerian Students (JCC NANS) Lagos axis officers to YabaTech
He said that as part of the Erect Agenda of the institution to repackage all academics & skills development programmes of the College, the exchange programme will take effect this year in which the beneficiaries will be exposed to international skill acquisition training programme which will qualify them to get employment in Chinese companies within and outside the country.
Dr. Abdul notified them that the institution is highly passionate to better the lot of students, because they are the reasons the Management is in existence and without which the institution cannot function.
The College according to him, is paying serious attention to student welfare and there are various programs in place for the benefit of the YABATECH students, such as Student Working Scheme in which students that are skilled in one area will be teaching other students and will be paid for the service rendered while learning.
The seventh Indigenous Rector of the foremost institution in Nigeria says the institution is saddled with the responsibility of equipping the students with necessary and relevant skills to be able to fit for the needs of the industry.
On building of a befitting Secretariat for the Students Union Government on the campus, he assured the team that a committee had been set up on the touching of the Students Union Building, and the College is set to replace the building with a multi-story building.
The building, he said, will occupy numerous offices with multi level centre and will be called Centre for Leadership and Engagement.
The building, upon completion will be named after the first Students Union President of the college, first Nigeria Labour Congress President and fellow of the institution, Comrade Hassan Adebayo Sumonu.
According to the Rector, “alternative energy will be adopted to solve the problem of electricity in the College, it will be made available in classrooms and in campus premises.
Also speaking, the Chairman, JCC, NANS Lagos axis, Comrade Alimi Lekan explained that they came to the College to show appreciation to the Rector for the good job he has been doing since assumption of duty and to make some requests on behalf of JCC NANS Lagos branch.
Comrade Lekan hinted that the youths are not only the future leaders, but partners in progress for the betterment of today and future, he thereby requested that the YABATECH Students Union Building should be given a facelift; electricity in the College should be improved upon and solicited for the College support for their intending programme in the institution.
