Nigeria Customs Service Rakes In N97.8b As Revenue For 2022 In Ogun ..Records Seizures Of 45,773 Bags of Foreign Parboiled Rice, Others





Nigeria Customs Service says its operatives at the Ogun 1 Area Command in Idiroko border made a total seizures of 957 in the just concluded year 2022 which included 45,773 bags of smuggled foreign parboiled rice of 50kg each, which is equivalent to 76 trailer loads, and 130 units of vehicles amongst others with over N5billion Duty Paid Value

The Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Bamidele Makinde who made this known on Thursday at an annual media briefing of the command's activities for the past one year  at Idiroko border, also revealed that a sum of N97.8billion was generated as revenue into the confers of the Federal Government  within the year under review which according to him, it is 300percent increase over N36,655,401.50 generated at the end of the corresponding year of 2021 


"The total revenue generated by the Command was N97,887,777.50. This was realized from auction sales of Petroleum products and baggage assessment of some items brought in from neighbouring countries. It is pertinent to state that the revenue generated in 2022 (N97,887,777.50) represented almost 300% increase on the year 2021 revenue ,"he stated


The Comptroller further gave the breakdown of the seizures to include 
smuggled foreign used vehicles and other vehicles used as means of conveying prohibited items as well as Premium Motor Spirit (PMS): 451,100liters which is an equivalent    of 14 Tanker loads 

He listed other seizures recorded during the year to include.Adulterated Diesel: One Tanker load,Cannabis Sativa: 43 Sacks, 351 small bags and 1,083 wraps of Book and Coconut sizes, Tramadol: 2,250 packetse as well as Motorcycles used for conveyance of prohibited items 30 Units of Secondhand clothing: 517 bales and 236 sacksg. 

According to him, foreign used bags: 3 bales and 384 pieces, foreign used tyres put at 2,953 pieces, used refrigerator compressors: 31 pieces,bags of Dangote Cement used for concealment of foreign rice 4,700 bags were seized alongside 
frozen poultry products put at 1,523 cartons


Makinde added that foreign textile: 89 bales and 485 pieces, 401 units of vehicle compressors, foreign shoes: 320 sacks, 120 cartons and 277 pairs,few foreign wine put at 520cartons and 220pieces302 sacks of foreign corn: .

"The total Duty Payable Value (DPV) of the above seizures is N5,088,982,569.92, while that of the year 2021 was N1,378,276,656.00 a differential of N3,710,705,913.92 which is about 269% higher" 

He attributed the success of the seizures to continous use of intelligence  gathering as well as the support of sister security agencies who provided the needed assistance in the execution of the operations as 

Makinde who recalled the sad story of how the command lost one of its officer in a ghastly motor accident, however assured the people  of border community of Idiroko of robust relationship while pledging to continue to support traders who engage in legitimate commercial activities with the needed information to grow their businesses

On the fight against the activities of smugglers, he revealed that 15 suspects were arrested and already charged to court

"The Command, besides the above seizures, also arrested 15 suspected smugglers. They were arrested at different locations and exit points within Ogun State with prohibited goods. While some of them were granted administrative bail and have yet to be charged to court some were charged to Court", he stated
