Nigeria's First Lady, Aisha Buhari has finally withdrawn case against a final year student of the Federal University, Dutse, Aminu Adamu, so as to avoid the threat by the leadership of Nigeria Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to mobilize students across the country for a protest on Monday against the continous detention of the student
It will be recalled that the 24 year-old Adamu was arrested by the police in Dutse for allegedly publishing a defamatory statement on his Twitter handle against the wife of President Buhari.
Adamu, who is studying Environmental Management was alleged in the offensive tweet, to have posted a rotund picture of the first lady with a caption in Hausa saying, “Mama is feeding fat on poor people’s money.”
The tweet of the accused was posted on June 8, 2022.
He was later detained in detention for nearly two weeks where it was alleged to have been tortured by the police before he was eventually arraigned on last Tuesday before Justice Yusuf Halilu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama
The student who pleaded not guilty to the allegation was then remanded at Suleja prison in Niger State.
While withdrawing the case against the accused on Friday, the prosecution counsel , Fidelis Ogbobe explained that the First Lady as the mother of the nation decided to withdraw the case, following the intervention of well-meaning Nigerians.
The counsel relied on Section 108 subsection 2(a) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act to move the application for the withdrawal of the case.
However,Justice Yusuf Halilu of the FCT High Court who presided over the matter, in his ruling commended Mrs Buhari for taking the “bold steps” to forgive the accused.
The judge then called on parents to always monitor their children to avoid recurrence of such criminal act .
The withdrawal will enable Adamu to sit for his coming semester examinations expected to begin on Monday
