The scarcity of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly known as Petrol being experienced across major cities in Nigeria in the past few weeks, worsened in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital on Sunday, with several filling stations not dispensing the product to motorists
Edu-biznews visited some major areas of Abeokuta including Abiola way, Asero and Adatan and observed many of the petrol stations shutting their gates to customers
One of the few stations with product located on Adatan-Asero axis was seen on Saturday dispensing it at N240 per litre to customers
The situation had forced transporters, particularly commercial car operators to hike their fares by 50 to 100percent depending on the distance within the city
For instance, commuters now pay N100 for a journey from Abiola way to Asero as against the N50 usual fare while those going to Obantoko from Olorunsogo pay as much as N150 or N200 instead of the normal N100
Only few commercial cars were seen operating on the roads, as many others are off the roads in search of the product
Most of the operators of the stations belonging the Independent Petroleum Marketers have been complaining of non-availability of the product at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited's depots at Mosanmi in Ogun State, Ore in Ondo State as well as Ejigbo in Lagos and Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, forcing them to buy at the rate of N195 per litre from Independent Depots
