Academics Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) has asked the Ogun State Government to strongly consider a review of its two years of internship for teachers engaged under the Ogun Teach Scheme, urging government to engage the teachers on permanent basis yearly after a year of internship
The State Chairman of ASUSS, Comrade Akeem Lasisi who made the call during the recent celebration of the 2022 World Teacher's Day at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, also pleaded with Governor Dapo Abiodun to increase the N1,000 being paid as allowance to teachers posted to rural areas to N10,000 to further encourage them to give their best in classrooms
"The Ogun TEACh scheme becomes an annual policy till the existing vacancies are filled and also allows the TEACh interns to serve for ONE year instead of the planned TWO years internship before they are integrated into the mainstream so as to heighten their productivity, commitment and dedication", he stated.
"Government should increase the payment of rural allowance to rural communities-based teachers from its current one thousand status to ten thousand naira so as to encourage teachers to stay in such schools", He added
Lasisi who was delivering his last speech as the leader of the association, stressed the need for government to invest in electronic lesson notes Initiative ,to further Improve on teaching environment
" Government, as a matter of urgency, should launch the e-lesson notes initiative being powered by the office of the Special Adviser on Primary and Secondary Education, Mrs Ronke Soyombo so that as the government is investing hugely in human capital and curriculum development, the efforts of the teachers and officers involved in the scheme would not be in vain", the association suggested .
According to him, "Government should make provisions for subsidized laptops for teachers in the state for data gathering, analysis, and presentation because the school academics and administrative procedures are now done online in conformity with international best practices"
Speaking on the theme of this year's celebration "The Transformation of Education Begins With Teachers", says the transformation of education cannot be done in isolation from the working, living and environmental conditions of the professionals who are core to the developmental roles of education in society"
He however warned government to urgently implement the agreements reached with workers , saying they are running out of patience
"Government, as a matter of honour and urgency, should implement other items included in the Memorandum of Action because the patience of workers is running out"
Lasisi also urged government to immediately release ₦1.5 billion which ought to have been before last July 30th and the upward review of the quarterly release of ₦500m for the payment of gratuity with effect from the 3rd quarter of this year.
He similarly called for implementation of the recommendations of the two committees on Contributory Pension Scheme and Consequential Adjustment on Minimum Pension whenever they are done with their task.
Lasisi had earlier commended the Prince Dapo Abiodun's administration for various initiatives including 100percent increase in running cost to schools, reroofing of the classrooms, recruitment of 2,000 teachers under Ogun Teach Scheme, redistribution of teachers, prompt release of BECE results, domestication of Schools Excellence Awards and others being implemented to improve standard of education system in the state in the past three years
