WAEC Branch Controller Worries Over Alarming Rate Of Exams Malpractices In Nigeria...Asks School Owners, Parents To Do More




An Abeokuta Branch Controller of The West African Examinations Counçil (WAEC), Mr. Ayobami Suberu has expressed concern over the alarming rate of suspected malpractices among  school candidates who wrote the 2022 West African Senior School Certificate Examinations WASSCE in Nigeria, asking school owners, government and parents to do more to reverse the disturbing trend 

The Head of Nigeria National office of the council, Patrick Areghan announcing the released results of WASSCE for School Candidates  on the 9th of August, 2022, revealed that  the results of 365, 564 candidates were seized for alleged Involvement in various cases of malpractices during the conduct of the examination 

Suberu who was speaking on a live radio programme in Abeokuta on Thursday monitored by Edu-biznews, described as worrisome, the 22.83 percent  of malpractices in this year's WASSCE, which is more than 100 percent higher than the 10.9 percent recorded in 2021 

He called on the ministry of education in various states and owners of private schools to rescue the unhealthy situation  by investing more in human capacity building of their respective teachers ,so as to reverse the trend 

According to him, exposing teachers to several opportunities being provided by WAEC to train and retrain teaching staff will acquaint them with the syllabus and standard of setting questions for the counçil's  examinations 

For instance, he asked owners of private schools to encourage their teachers to participate in the examinations counçil's capacity training programmes where they would be trained and recognized as  examiners for WAEC 

The Branch Controller added that the performances of schools in WASSCE who have examiners as teaching staff would be definitely  better than those without examiners as teachers

He also stressed the need for the ministry of education in respective states to synergize with WAEC in capacity building of teachers in public schools to adequately prepare the students for examinations and reduce rate of malpractices

Suberu equally asked parents to always be interested in the academic performance of their children and make sure they are adequately prepare for public examinations such WASSCE while urging students to avail themselves of the opportunities being provided by WAEC on its portal 
www.waeconline.org.ng to prepare themselves for examinations rather than looking for short cut to pass 

He called for collective efforts of the society to urgently address the dangerous trend of malpractices among candidates in the country

The Branch Controller however praised the Ogun State Commissioner  for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu and the Prince Dapo Abiodun led administration' for revolutionizing education sector in tandem with WAEC standard
