Ogun State Government has ordered traders who erected illegal shanties and trade along the rail corridors, median and walkways in Abeokuta and its environs to evacuate such structures to pave way for free flow of traffic and ensure sanity in the markets
The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Environment, Hon. Farouk Akintunde, made this known during an enforcement tour of officials of Ministry of Environment to markets in the state capital, following several complaints by road users on the hardships being faced as a result of the roadside trading activities.
Addressing traders at Lafenwa market, Akintunde pointed out that areas where the traders erected the shanties, were designated for the construction of motor parks and ultra-modern toilet facility for the use of the people, advising them to vacate the area.
Speaking at Omida market, the Senior Special Adviser implored the traders to make use of the ultra-modern shopping complex allocated to them and desist from displaying wares on walkways and roadsides, regarding it as a violation of environmental laws of the State, which people should discontinue, to ensure orderliness and sanity in the market environment.
On his part, the Head of Environmental Health Department, Sanitarian Wemimo Onaeko enjoined traders to comply with the State government’s directives to avoid being sanctioned, noting that the illegal acts did not only deface the environment but also pose a great threat to their lives and property.
Responding, the representative of Iyaloja of Lafenwa market, Alhaja Sidikat Owe, assured the State government that the concerned traders would comply with the stated directives, saying the market authority would relocate them to a safer area
