Muslim Women Ask FG, ASUU To End Strike

The Federation of Muslim Women Associations in Nigeria has asked both the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities to find ways of resolving their issues , to enable students  return to school.

The lecturers in public universities extended their over six months old strike indefinitely, following the insistance of the Federal Government on applying the no work, no pay rule against members of the union who are demanding for payment of arrears of their salaries before returning to classrooms

National Amirah of FOMWAN, Alhaja Rafiah Sanni made the call at a press conference in Port Harcourt ahead of the body’s 37th national conference holding in the Rivers State capital

She expressed sadness over the lingering strike as she called for the intervention of everyone concerned.

“The association passionately appeals to the government at the three tiers to strive harder in the areas of education, particularly in resolving the lingering rift between ASUU and the Federal Government to get our children back to school”, she pleaded

Sanni who was speaking against the backdrop of the World Literacy Day held on Thursday, says “It becomes more imperative for the government, teachers and other stakeholders to show more commitment to the provision of quality education for all Nigerians.

She gave the theme of the conference as ‘Bridging the inter-generational gaps of sustainable development: Spectrum of opportunities using the Islamic lens.’

“With other sub-topics like; developing effective framework towards enhancing sustainable livelihood,” she stated, noting that the body is a non-governmental and not-for-profit organisation founded in 1985 and registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission.

Federal Government according to findings, is set to dragg ASUU to industrial court over refusal of the union to suspend the strike , after resolving all contending issues
