Education Minister To ASUU - FG Will Not Sign Fresh Agreements

A 14-Man Committee  set up by the Federal Government of Nigeria being led by Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu has declared that government would not enter into fresh agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU whose members are on the indefinite strike in public universities over unresolved issues

The Adamu Adamu led committee was set up to look into the recommendations of the Prof. Nimi Briggs led committee in charge of the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement between the government and the university-based staff unions including ASUU as well as the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (NASU), among others.

But the minister insisted in a meeting with stakeholders in Abuja that government would not sign any agreement now that will be very difficult to implement just like the 2009 agreements reach with the previous administration

The committee members include  pro-chancellors, vice-chancellors and other stakeholders.

Adamu on Tuesday inaugurated the 14-man committee to look into the recommendations concerning the resolution of the lingering ASUU strike.

The members of the committee include Prof. Olu Obafemi, Prof. Nimi Briggs, Udo Udoma, Bashir Dalhatu, Prof. Kayode Adebowale,(University of Ibadan) Prof. Kabir Bala (Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria), Prof. Lilian Salami (University of Benin), Prof. Charles Igwe (University of Nigeria Nsukka), Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede; representatives of the Academy of Letters, Science, Medicine and Social Sciences

It will be recalled that the non academic based unions in public universities suspended their respective industrial actions in August while their counterpart union in the academic has been on strike since 14th of February and extended it indefinitely last Month, following the no work no pay rule being applied by the Federal Government
