The Ogun State Government's transportation master plan has been described as a critical initiative that will improve the State's prosperity and boost its economy.
The State Commissioner for Transportation, Engr. Gbenga Dairo who gave the assertion in Abeokuta, during a chat with newsmen , says. the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun's determination to have a radical transformation of the transport sector was what led to the development of a multimodal and integrated plan for the State.
He noted that the plan, which was developed in collaboration with the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Department of Transport Management, would ensure that the people of Ogun State have access to all economic activity centers and a safe, reliable and affordable transport system.
According to him, the plans have a multimodal dimension that includes, rehabilitation of roads, railway transportation, cargo airport and water transportation, adding that public-private partnership is significant in developing transport infrastructure and training of personnel.
Dairo explained that the ministry has the responsibility to regulate both formal and informal sectors, and also develop laws that would govern the transportation sector, in order to make the plan a reality.
“We have drafted a law that will govern the sector and that law has the mechanism to drive the funding for the delivery of that programme. So, we envisage a situation whereby the funding of the plan will come from domestic resources, international support and indeed private sector involvement”, the Commissioner said
Dairo stated that one of the outcomes of the plan which is the pilot phase of the Bus Mass Transit Scheme recently launched, would give commuters access to move around in an air-conditioned and free Wifi buses along Ita-oshin-Adata route.
He added that the plan features access arrangements to different economic clusters across the State, such as the Olokola Sea Port, which is heavily reliant on water bodies, as a mode of transportation would attract potential investors to the State, which would serve as a catalyst for the State's economic development
