A Public Relations Expert, Tope Adaramola has offered tips to Public Relations Practitioners on how to function effectively within the Nigeria's tertiary Institution system, to curb students unrest and ensure Industrial harmony with both academic and non-academic staff
Adaramola presenting a lead paper titled "Public Relations: A Management Function and Tools For Advancement" at a maiden annual Public Relations workshop for practitioners organized recently by the Federal College of Education in Osiele, Abeokuta, stressed the need for practitioners to be on top of their game for them to remain relevant to management of their respective Institutions
The immediate past Chairman of the Ogun State chapter of Nigeria Institute Of Public Relations NIPR asked practitioners to be adaptive to ever changing environment, saying they must be dynamic in their responses to situations using modern tools, particularly using social media platforms when necessary
"The tools of yesterday can no longer address today’s challengesFast.In a fast paced world, the PR practitioner cannot be stagnant in his response to issues", he urged
The guest speaker charged practitioners to be data minded for effective evaluation of their PR campaign or activities
According to him, "The days are past when PR practitioners abhor figures and data. Today, the world is data driven and the need to “scientise” our strategies, using data to evaluate all our campaign initiatives for appreciation of results by management is a fait accompli.Intelligence"
Adaramola who is the Executive Secretary/CEO of the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers enjoined them to have intelligence Quotient, so as to excel in their respective roles as image makers in tertiary Institution system
""The PR man of today must be “intelligent” in all respects. He must not hang on Intelligence Quotient (IQ) alone, he needs Social Quotient (SQ), Emotional Quotient (EQ) and even lately, Spiritual Quotient (SQ) to stand out and excel".
He expressed concern that the greatest challenge facing PR practitioners "is the denigration of what roles it should play in organisations or its perception by management".
Adaramola insisted that PR practitioners must be accorded their due respect by involving them in critical management's decisions to avoid unnecessary crisis in their respective Institutions and organizations
"This is not only reflected in the nomenclature of “PRO” which I resent, but also the ceiling often unjustifiably placed on the PR professionals on the organizational ladder. A lot of times, PR officers are often perceived and treated as “mere messengers,” or “fall guys” when the organization is the butt of an image crisis that could have been avoided if PR had been given its place in the critical decision making process"
Provost of FCE, Osiele,Dr Rafiu Soyele while declaring open the workshop open, commended the Public Relations unit of the college for the initiative, promising to always give the unit the needed support in the subsequent edition to ensure a better outing
The workshop attracted seasoned PR practitioners in some of the tertiary institutions in the country as well as officers of the Community Social Orientation And Safey Corps (So-Safe Corps) a Security outfit of the Ogun State Government.
