World Bank Lauds Ogun For Leading Other States In Women Empowerment

World Bank has expressed satisfaction with the level of commitment of the Ogun State Government in implementing women empowerment initiatives of the Federal Government, describing the state as first among equals in Nigeria

The leader of the bank's Task Team Lead of the Nigeria For Women Project (NFWP), Mr. Michael Ilesanmi says the World Bank is encouraged by the level of commitment demonstrated by the State government in the implementation of the NFWP.

Ilesanmi, who stated this in Abeokuta during a meeting with the Commissioner for Finance and Chief Economic Adviser to the Governor, Mr. Dapo Okubadejo, noted that the State is the first in the country that currently has about 2,430 Women Affinity Groups (WAGs).

He maintained that the signing of the Executive Order on 35 percent representation for women in governance and politics by the Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun would further enhance Ogun women’s emancipation agenda.

“Ogun State has always been the first in many ways and they have proved it again with the signing of the Executive Order, and commitment towards this project. The State has been a model for other States, not only in the South West, but the country at large. The NFWP is a strategic long-term partnership between the Nigeria Government and the World Bank to support the government's goal of ensuring gender equality”, Ilesanmi said.

He assured that the Task Team would continue to offer aid to the project in terms of technical assistance, impact evaluation, innovations and many more.

Responding, Okudabejo, disclosed that the State has over 22 projects with various Development Partners across different sectors of the economy, saying the NFWP aligns with the State’s economic development agenda.

He said with over 37,000 women involved in the project in the State, the Prince Dapo Abiodun-led administration would continue to improve their lot.
