Use Energy Efficient Bulbs To Reduce Carbon Emissions- Ogun Commissioner Tells Nigerians

Nigerians have been advised to always use energy efficient bulbs and turn off their light when not being used, as part of safety measures to mitigate or reduce the emission of carbon in the environment 

The Ogun State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Tpl. Tunji Odunlami who offered the safety tips at an event marking the 2021 World Habitat Day held at Oba's Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, also stressed the need for the public to join hands with government to ensure a safer and carbon free environment,  

He identified other safety measures to reduce carbon emissions to include, the use of alternative means of transport to work, embracing the 3Rs including reduce, reuse and recycle as well as change of dietary habits. 

He says the issue of increasing generation of greenhouse gases and increasing carbon footprints are largely urban centers' phenomenon and to a lesser extent the rural areas.

Odunlami said the serious issue of impact of urban and city activities on the ever-increasing carbon footprints calls for a course of action towards reducing it and eventual zero generation of carbon 

Odunlami opined that "we owe it to our planet and our continuous survival to get on the train of this advocacy by changing our habits and spreading the gospel to our communities ".

Delivering a goodwill message at the event, the National President, Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, Tpl Olutoyin Ayinde said the urban centres accounted for more than 70% of emissions produced globally through activities of transportation, buildings, energy and waste management which have contributed significantly to generating greenhouse gas emissions.

 He said "we definitely cannot shift the responsibility to anyone, but ourselves, to make the world a better place, not just for us, but for generations yet unborn".

Tpl. Ayinde called on governments throughout Nigeria to become alive to their responsibilities for planning while making use of the knowledge, wisdom and skills of Town Planners to help them in transforming their various visions, policies and plans into blueprints as Master Plans, Sector Plans, District Plans, and Action Plans that will ultimately deliver settlements that are conducive for living.
