Ogun State Government has laid the foundation for the construction of a N245million building project in Moshood Abiola Polythecnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, to further boost its quest for technical education and production of highly skilled graduates from the State owned tertiary Institutions
The State Education,Science and Technology Commissioner , Prof.Abayomi Arigbabu who performed the foundation laying of the skill acquisition and vocational training centre on Wednesday in Abeokuta ,lauded the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and other tertiary education regulatory bodies for compulsory inclusion of technical/vocational education as integral part of training undergraduates in Nigeria
Arigbabu stressed the need for combination of academic work and vocational programmes as part of the training of graduates, so as to drive the technological and Industrial growth of the country
He appreciated the institution for the choice of project being funded under 2018 Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) , saying that it was in tandem with the vision of Prince Dapo Abiodun's administration , "the governor is so keen about technical , vocational education and training"
Arigbabu reminded students of the Institution to see their venturing into vocational training, for as another way of revitalising the economy of the state and Nigeria as a whole.
The commissioner explained that the focus of polythecnic was to develop the type of manpower that could meet the need of the country particularly in technical and technology aspect.
His words,"Our hope is that the polythecnic here should be the one producing things that we need in terms of tools in the state , we should be taking it to other states and even exporting them , we expects that graduates of this institution should be able to do that".
"Right now we are working with the World bank to digitalised all our eight technical colleges and vocational training centres along with some other projects with total package of about 250 million dollars", Arigbabu revealed
" We have moved far and we have gone to our technical colleges , need assessment has been done , focus discussion has been done to find out what the needs of the area where those technical colleges are situated,"he added.
According to him,"The project is called Ogun State Economic Transformation Project of world bank , all the eight technical colleges will be revitalise and we are going to ensure they are equip with modern equipments"
Arigbabu commended TETFUND for sponsoring the project , calling on the contractor to deliver the project at the stipulated time.
Acting Rector of the Institution,
Dr. Adeoye Odedeji had earlier
stated that the institution was gradually queuing into Technical, Vocational , Education and Training (TIVET) policy of the present administration,by initiating the skill acquisition centre being funded by TETFUND
Odedeji explained that vocational and skill acquisition was capable of reducing unemployment in the society , saying that it had the capacity to turn around the economy of the country.
He explained that the institution wanted its students to be dual certificated , "they will have certificate in academics and certificate in any craft they choose," he said.
Mr Adeyemi Sanusi, the Contractor handling the project, assured that the multi-million naira project would be completed in six months.
