Adeyemi Olamide of Saint John Private School, Kuto, Abeokuta has emerged as the winner of Junior Boys Singles of the recently concluded maiden Governor Dapo Abiodun Table Tennis Championship in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital
Olamide defeated Akanbi Ebenezer of NUD High School, Isabo in the final played at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Alake Sports Complex, Ijeja, Abeokuta
Also Popoola Mariam from Ebenezer Grammar School, Abeokuta clinched the the Junior Girls Singles title, after beating Yekini Yetunde of Command Secondary Schools Abeokuta to the second position
In the Cadet Boys Singles, Bamgboye Joseph of Catholic Comprehensive High School Abeokuta claimed the first price while the second price went to Obadele Ayobami from Glorious College, Abeokuta.
Kareem Karimot from Premier Grammar School, Abeokuta emerged the winner
in the Cadet Girls Singles, defeating Babatunde Busola from Catholic Comprehensive High School in the final
The State Commissioner for Youth and Sport, Dr Oluwadare Kehinde speaking at the final of the maiden table-tennis tournament,assured that the Dapo Abiodun's administration would continue to engage youths for meaningfully development of Sport in the state.
Kehinde described the 1st Prince Dapo Abiodun Table Tennis Championship as an initiative of the Ogun State Ministry of Youth and Sports, to commemorate the two years anniversary of Governor Dapo Abiodun in office
The Commissioner promised that the initiative would be sustained as part of the strategic plan of the ministry of youth and sport to always use the platform for youths, to express themselves in sports thereby paving way for them to compete and win laurels
Kehinde says efforts are being made to ensure the competition is held in the three senatorial district of the state at different times, to provide opportunities for other other youths in the state to showcase their talents
He explained that this would help the state to get quality young players to represent the state and compete for laurels among the committee of states in the country.
The Director of Sports in the State Sport Council, Mrs Iyabode Rotimi in her welcoming address, appreciated the laudable initiatives of Governor Dapo Abiodun on Youth and sport development, saying his uncommon passion and tremendous support for the sports industry in the state is a morale booster for sport industry in the state.
Her words, "To us as an organization, this event is not only to celebrate the "two year in office of our sport loving governor; His Excellency Prince Dapo Abiodun M.F.R." but it is to also celebrate the two years of a wonderful and excellent working relationship with Mr. Governor", she stated .
She lauded the administration's policies and programmes including sport trust fund, aimed at developing sports in the state
Rotimi appreciated the welfare package for the Team-Ogun at the last National Sports Festival in Edo State, calling for more support to the athletes to further excel in future competitions
"We will like to use this opportunity to thank our amiable governor ; Prince Dapo Abiodun and like the proverbial Oliver Twists, we are still looking forward to see more of such patronage and support from him and we will continue to reciprocate the good gesture by always giving our best at every opportunity that we have to represent the state", she requested.
