A bill seeking the establishment of a
Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital has been passed by the Nigeria's Senate
The Senate on Wednesday,also passed a bill to establish the Federal College of Education, Gwoza in Borno State.
Former Governor,Senator Ibikunle Amosun sponsored the bill for the establishment of the specialized university initiated by the immediate past Chief Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre , Idi-Aba,Abeokuta, Prof.Adewale Musa-Olomu
The passage of both bills followed consideration of two separate reports by the Committee on Health (Secondary and Tertiary) and Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND
Senator Umar Sadiq, who presented the report of the Senate Committee on Health on behalf of its Chairman, Senator Yahaya Oloriegbe, explained that the establishment of the Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences in Abeokuta was informed by the imperative to create more access to higher education in the field of medicine and medical sciences.
He added that when established, the university would attract people to Abeokuta, Ogun State through the provision of higher educational academic and professional programmes to those seeking to pursue degrees in the field of medicine and allied professional disciplines.
Similarly, Senator Sandy Onuh, presented the report by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND on behalf of its Chairman, Babba Kaita Ahmad.
According to him, the establishment of the Federal College of Education, Gwoza, will support the North East zone in improving educational infrastructural needs while balancing access to education among diverse demographics in the country
Edu-Biznews recalled that President Muhammedu Buhari recently this week approved the establishment of four universities including two universities of technology to be located in Jigawa and Akwa Ibom states, and two the universities of health sciences to be established in Azare, Bauchi State and Ila Orangun, Osun State.
