Ogun Tourism Commissioner Worries Over Degeneration Of Cultural Value In Nigeria

Ogun State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism,Dr. Oluwatoyin Taiwo  has expressed concern over the current devaluation and degeneration of cultural values in Nigeria

The Commissioner Insists on giving the Yoruba cultural heritage and other local traditional values, a pride of place in the scheme of things, to reverse the disturbing trend in the country

Taiwo expressed the concern  while declaring open the sixth J.A. Atanda Lectures and Conference, with the theme " Yoruba Culture and Society" at the Amphitheater of Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo.

The Commissioner maintained that the Yoruba culture is a vibrant, solid and enviable heritage that extolled the concept of ‘Omoluwabi’ which encapsulates ethics and morals, such as hard-work, respect, integrity, comportment, exhibition of proper upbringing, courteousness, and extension of hands of fellowship, among others, which are held in high esteem in the society.

His words,“If nothing is done to salvage the deplorable condition of our culture, there may be need to use huge amount of the country's resources to retrain our children in our culture, therefore, all hands must be on deck to appreciate, promote, sustain and identify with our heritage, in order to be a bonafide member of the Yoruba society, because a lost identity is an invitation to penury,"

The Convener of the lecture, Professor Toyin Falola explained that  the essence of the conference was to remember and honour Professor Joseph Atanda who had contributed immensely to the understanding of Yoruba institutions, kingship, colonial and pre-colonial history, saying a way of appreciating his landmark achievements was to continue to place Yoruba culture on high pedestal, through awards of scholarship to students in Yoruba discipline.

In her lecture, titled, “Yoruba Culture in a Changing World", Professor Arinpe Adejumo, of the University of Ibadan posited that human activities in Yoruba Culture should be tailored towards positive direction, to enhance national and socio-economic development, enjoining government and policy makers to make revitalisation, documentation and preservation of culture paramount in enhancing sustainable development.

The honoree’s daughter, Dr. Ajoke Fatunde, while appreciating the convener of the event, said her father’s legacy has remained an inspiration for the family.

Dignitaries at the event include, former Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Alhaja Salimot Badru, the Olofin of Ilisan-Remo, Oba Michael Sonuga, the Orangun of Oke-Ila, Osun State, His Royal Highness, Oba Abolarin Adedokun, prominent film maker Tunde Kelani, and foremost private art collector, Yemisi Shyllon, among others.
