Ogun State Government has frowned at the news flying round the state of the deaths of two secondary school students of the Baptist Boys High School, Oke-saje, Abeokuta
It was reported in some sections of the media not Edu-Biznews, that the two students were fear dead in the reprisal bloody clash on Monday between Ilugun High School and Baptist Boys High School Abeokuta in Isaje /Elega area of the city
But the Special Adviser to the Governor on Primary and Secondary Education, Mrs. Ronke Soyombo, addressing newsmen during a monitoring exercise to BBHS and Ilugun High School, in the Abeokuta North LG, debunked the rumour
She clarified that no lives were lost in the two schools, based on the report received by the State Ministry of Education Science and Technology from the security agencies
The Special Adviser disclosed that a student of BBHS, Kowi Adeyemi, a Senior Secondary School (S.S 2) was attacked on friday, 25th June, 2021, though the boy sustained some injuries but he is alive, with his parents and responding to treatment
She warned that government would not tolerate reportage of false and unconfirmed news.
Soyombo also cautioned learners with unruly behaviour to desist from schools in the state or risk being expelled if caught in the act, stressing that no private school would be allowed to admit such students.
"We are reiterating that no child died in our schools, there was a fracas on Friday after school hours and a child sustained bruises on his head but he did not die and peace have been restored to our schools. There is zero tolerance for bad behaviour in schools, any students caught with such will be expelled and will not be given admission into any private schools", Soyombo said.
She admonished parents to be vigilant with their wards, the clothes, drinks and foods they take, the friends they keep and their movement should be monitored at all times, she therefore called for parents to support government efforts in restoring great morals in schools.
In her own submission, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Abosede Ogunleye charged students to be on their best behaviour at all times, while she reiterated that students that would be sitting for the WASSCE examinations must have 75% attendance before they would be allowed to write the exam.
The Principal, BBHS Senior School, Mr. Oluseyi Kusimo, faulted the unconfirmed report of death of their students by some media station which he said was totally untrue, he revealed that learners are in school and settled in their various classes.
Some of the parents who were on ground in Ilugun High School, said there was panic because of the fear of reprisal attacks but seeing the officials of the ministry, has calmed their fears
They also highlighted some security measures that could be taken to curb the excesses of the unruly learners, while also agreeing that students caught with a questionable character should be expelled.
Speaking on behalf of the students, the Senior Prefects, Samuel Ifeoluwa of BBHS and Adebimpe Waris of Ilugun High School, promised to encouraged their colleagues to desist from any despicable acts and be good ambassadors of the school and state.
