Governors elected under the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC) are set to begin the process for the implementation of the autonomy of the judiciary and State Houses of Assembly
Edu-Biznews recalled that both workers in the judiciary and legislative arms of various states agreed to suspend their two months strike and resumed work last Tuesday,following the agreement reached with the Governors on the implementation of the financial autonomy for the two arms of government, as amended in the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
The Governors arrived at the decision to implement the autonomy at their emergency meeting of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), which is the umbrella body of APC governors in Abuja
The implementation is inline with the recommendations of the Govenor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal-led NGF Committee.
Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State who is the chairman of the forum in a statement on Friday in Abuja, explained that consultations would commence by Attorneys-General of APC-controlled states, to provide necessary legal framework for the implementation of the amendment in the constitution
Badugu said that the Governor Tambuwal-led NGF Committee consulted all the critical stakeholders, including leadership of State Judiciary and Assemblies and jointly reached agreements on specific initiatives to be taken by state governments to guarantee autonomy for state judiciary and assemblies.
He added that the meeting endorsed the agreement and enjoined all APC-controlled states and indeed all states to commence the process of implementing the submitted recommendations.
“As part of the process of implementing the NGF agreements in APC controlled states, appropriate consultations with Attorneys-General will take place in order to provide all necessary legal frameworks for the implementation of the Governor Tambuwal-led NGF Committee’s proposed recommendations.”
Acknowledging the enormity of the challenges facing the country, the Forum commended the efforts of the Federal Government in addressing and resolving the challenges.
The Forum then pledged it’s commitment to continue to support all the initiatives of the Federal Government under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari.
