Ogun State Government has concluded plan to introduce "Polluter Pay Principle" model of waste collection in 2021, to rid the state of non-degradable materials such as plastic bottles and nylons, which constitute environmental hazard.
The State Environment Commissioner Hon Abiodun Abudu-Balogun who unfolded the plan recently , explained that under the Polluter Pay Principle model , companies using the materials as their end products, pay certain amount into government coffers, as part of their contributions in clearing drainages and canals where they cause hazards and havoc.
The Commissioner while defending the Ministry's 2021 budget proposal at the Ogun State House of Assembly in Abeokuta, called for the cooperation of the companies concerned to make the principle a huge success, as their contributions is just a fraction of what the government spends in clearing the materials.
He added that the ministry would construct drainage channels in and around major markets across the State, saying it would not relent in dredging canals and water courses to prevent flooding and its unpleasant consequences, as well as fumigation of all abattoirs to promote healthy environment around them.
Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment and Chief Executive Officer of Ogun State Waste Management Agency (OGWAMA), Mr.Ola Oresanya, on the 2021 budget proposal, said the agency is determined to make the State one of the cleanest next year, through its circular economic programmes, such as waste collection, use and recycling, urging the house to appropriate sizeable amount for its operation.
