Edo 2020 Festival:Team-Ogun Preparing Athletes For 32 Events





Team-Ogun contingents will be competing for medals in 32 events  at the 20th National Sports Festival in Benin-city tagged "Edo 2020", holding between December 3rd and 18th.

The athletes are already fine-tuning their preparation for the game at both the Alake Sports Complex, Ijeja in Abeokuta, the state capital and the Dipo Dina International Stadium in Ijebuode.

Acting Director of Sports, Mrs Iyabode Rotimi who revealed this in an exclusive chat with Edu-Biznews over the weekend at the State Sports Council in Abeokuta, listed the events to include, Abula, Badminton, Chess,Darts, Karate,Kick-boxing, Kokowa,Kong-fu,Rugby, Scrabble, Squash, Swimming, Tennis and Wrestling.

Other events according to her, are Athletics , Deaf Athletics,Para-Athletics, Ayo, Beach-Volleyball, Dambe ,Golf, Gymnastics, Judo, Langa , Deaf Table Tennis, Para-Tsble Tennis, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Para-power lifting, Weight lifting, Basketball, Boxing, Cricket, Cycling, Football, Handball , Hockey and Volleyball.

She said the state was preparing very hard for games, disclosing that officials now work from morning till 10pm daily, to ensure adequate preparation for the athletes and better performance at the festival.

"In Ogun State, we always begin our preparation, immediately after every festival, we are always ready for the game, but for COVID-19 pandemic, we had to put our preparation on hold for some months until when the Presidential Taskforce relaxed its restrictions and allowed  activities in non-combat sports , later the Taskforce allowed other events in combat sports as well as Team events in compliance with strict COVID-19 guidelines." She stated .

"We've doing our best in non-combat individual events and other team events, preparing our athletes in earness for the festival, all hands are on the desk for good outing in Edo 2020", Rotimi added .


No fewer than  591 Team-Ogun  athletes and officials tentatively will be taking part at the Nigeria's mini-Olympic in Edo State. 

Team-Ogun will be hoping to improve on its two previous outings which seriously dropped from 7th position and total medals haul  of 15 gold, 22 silver and 31 bronze recorded at the Eko 2012 festival in Lagos State to 12th placed at the last 2018 festival  held in Abuja where it garnered a total of Eight gold, 15 silver and 41 bronze medals.
